A free-format voice-controlled navigator
Navigation services have gained momentum both in the form of hand-held navigators and automotive navigation systems. GPS-enabled mobile phones expect reach a customer base of more than 100 million within the near future and the emergence of ultra low-cost line fitted navigation systems will significantly increase the automotive volume. Navigation and many related services are, however, rather difficult to use while on-the-move. Complicated user interfaces have two effects – in automotive environments they can turn the driver into a traffic hazard and, on a general note, they discourage usage. Legislators world-wide are discussing restrictions on systems which distract the driver. Consumers are unwilling to pay for things they can’t readily access.
The Personal Navigator is a user interface and application control engine essentially performing the following functions:
- Searching an address book or a directory application for the address to a person or company,
- Sending the address data to a navigation application,
- Retrieving information about points of interest, and
- Sending voice commands to the navigation application.
The Personal Navigator does not replace the native navigation or address book applications, but adds an intelligent free-format voice interface to them. This makes navigation on the move easy to use and allows the user to benefit from all the additional information embedded in digital map data.
